Daingerfield-Lone Star ISD is now in search of its next head football coach and athletic director after the recent resignation of Mike Waldie.
Waldie, who came to Blue Tigerland two years ago, is now headed to Pearland High School as offensive coordinator. Prior to taking the helm at Daingerfield, Waldie coached in Woodville ISD. This past season, the Daingerfield Tigers, under Waldie’s leadership, finished 7-5 after losing to Gunter 38-3 in the second round of the playoffs. Pearland capped off the 2017 season with a 5-4 record after a loss in the first round of playoff action.
Waldie replaced former athletic director Aric Sardinea who coached at Daingerfield for five years. Prior to Sardinea’s tenure, Barry Bowman posted three 2A state football championships in three seasons before leaving the post.
Since Waldie’s resignation announcement in late February, the name Dennis Alexander has been on the short list as a possible successors. Alexander, who spent 13 seasons at Daingerfield from 1976-1988, is best known for leading the Tigers to two state football championships in 1983 and 1985. Alexander, now 70, unceremoniously ended a 44-year coaching career after a 2015 suspension and dismissal from Troup ISD. Alexander recently settled with the district after a dispute involving possible aggressive contact with a player and was awarded $200,000. In addition to Troup and Daingerfield, Alexander has also previously coached at Hughes Springs, Henderson and Harleton.
