The City of Daingerfield and the Daingerfield City Council have a new council member following the death of longtime council member Marvin "Mike" Carter.

At the June 16 regular meeting, the council voted to appoint former council member Bob Thorne. Council member Ben Ramirez, citing experience as a key reason, made the motion. The final vote was unanimous. The City accepted applications until June 13 following Carter's untimely death. In accordance with the City’s Home Rule Charter, the Council issued a vacancy notice and intent to appoint. The notice allows for the appointment of a council member in the event of death of a sitting member.

Carter, 74, died May 14 surrounded by family and friends. He was born Feb. 27, 1951, in Atlanta. A graduate of Linden-Kildare, he served in the U.S. Army before working for AEP/SWEPCO. He later owned and operated Carter Plumbing and was a longtime member of First Baptist Church Daingerfield. He was also a devoted Tiger football fan.

Carter is survived by three children, five grandchildren, a sister and a host of nieces and nephews.
